The Power of Thinking in Threes

Your brain loves the number three.

For one thing, it can only hold about 3 things in your short term memory at a time. The number 3 is also the lowest figure that can create patterns in your mind – and your brain loves patterns.

Productivity experts rave about doing things in threes. Keeping things limited to this amount allows for greater focus without overwhelm. That sounds good to me.

So, how can you hack this love of your brain for the number 3?

  • Work on three or less projects or goals at a time
  • Set three priorities a day to be more productive
  • Communicate more clearly with a maximum of 3 points at a time
  • Decorate your home with items grouped in threes
  • Choose three things on your to do list as next steps
  • Teach something with 3 steps or parts
  • Use groups of threes in writing for sentence and content structure
  • Learn a new habit in 3 weeks
  • If something feels overwhelming, break it down into small steps and focus on 3 at a time

Using the power of thinking in threes is one of my favorite brain hacks to play with. Maybe it will be one of yours too.
