Living the Truth

There was a time in my life when I was a little girl that I felt very insecure. One of the ways I coped with this was to tell people made up stories that made me sound more important than I felt. I told so many falsehoods that I couldn’t keep track of them, which became a source of extreme stress. Eventually, I was found out and became more ostracized than ever.

That was when I became a lover of truth.

It’s not just about not telling lies, but incorporating truth in several ways throughout my life. Living in alignment with what is real in the world and interacting as my highest self help me feel more peaceful and confident. You can too. Here is how:

Discover Truth

In today’s world of fake news and misinformation it’s hard to know who or what to trust. While you may not find all the answers you want, there will be some things you can believe in.

Start by researching reliable, unbiased sources and gathering facts. Be open to different ideas and paradigms because you may have some internal misbeliefs or programming that are keeping you stuck. Just focus on the facts.

And then, listen to your heart and ask yourself what you know for sure. The real truth comes when you combine the known facts with the guidance of your inner wisdom.

Sometimes, the truth is that you won’t have all the answers you want and it is important to be able to accept that and live without them. It’s better to have a small foundation of facts you can trust than a lot of possible answers you can’t. The best thing you can do is to focus on the facts you have, keep listening to your gut and follow your intuition.

Speak Honorably

In his book The Four Agreements, don Miguel Ruiz talks about being impeccable with your word. I love that phrase and use it often. Don’t get the idea that I do this perfectly. We are all human here. But, being grounded in a desire to speak the truth feels good and brings me closer to my highest self.

Being impeccable with your word is also about keeping your promises and commitments. This includes the ones you make to yourself. For some reason we think it’s okay to lie and break promises to ourselves or use words to cut ourselves down, even if we don’t do it to others. We need to stop that. Definitely. For sure. Make the words that you speak and the ones that flow through your mind be full of truth and kindness.

Live the Truth

When we live in alignment with what we know is true we feel and do better. We are guided by our core values, live authentically and tap into our best selves. We will do what is right and create healthy habits. We will honor ourselves and others. We will forgive and let go of issues from the past so that we can be fully present today. And, we will understand that we are all children of God on an interesting journey called life.

I often say that life is simpler when you focus on the truth and let the rest fall away. But, the real benefits it brings are strength, peace, confidence and even a sense of pride in who you become as you live a truth based life.

I sure hope you give it a try. You will be glad you did.
