Moving from California to Small Town Missouri – 10 Years Later

moving to a small town with my dog

On this day ten years ago, I drove up to my new home in Missouri with a friend riding shotgun and my two very unhappy cats in the back seat. We had been on the road for 3 days, driving mostly on I 70 through Nevada, Utah, Colorado and Kansas to get here. Needless to say, the views were amazing.

My move was a new adventure, including a new house, community and culture. I had also sold or given away a large percentage of my possessions before leaving CA.  It felt both scary and exciting.

But my family was here. My son, daughter-in-law and 3 grandkids who I love very much. That was all I needed.

My life has certainly been different since the move.

It wasn’t just the location that changed. I needed to adapt to snow and humidity, driving to the nearest city to get things that used to be around the corner, and people waving at me all the time.

Volunteering helped me find my way into the community of people who all grew up together and feel the joys of connection and service.

Best of all, I see my family regularly and was here when my great grandson was born, grandkids graduated from college and now, as my granddaughter buys her first home.

Since the move I have bought another house, adopted a dog and volunteered in several ways. I also learned:

  • Life seems simpler and more relaxed in a small town
  • There is a strong sense of community and people look out for each other
  • There is always something going on, including library events, the farmer’s market, summer and fall festivals, a small concert venue with well-known artists, and even a Christmas lighted tractor parade.
  • Golf carts and lawn mowers are accepted forms of transportation
  • Everyone knows everyone, which is mostly fun, but can get complicated at times
  • Vegetable gardens are a big thing here
  • It’s much quieter, except when everyone is mowing
  • It’s impossible not to be excited about the first snow
  • Or crave spring long before it arrives
  • Wildlife like rabbits, birds, squirrels, raccoons, possums and foxes will provide entertainment and call your yard home

I’ve been documenting this journey over the last ten years and for those of you who are interested, the following posts share the story of my move and assimilation into small town Missouri life.
