How to Figure Things Out

figure things out

“Everything is figureoutable.” – Marie Forleo

While I’m not sure that I agree that EVERYTHING is figureoutable, I’m pretty sure most things are. It’s not always easy though. Whether we are brainstorming or making decisions, the process will go more smoothly when we are focused and tap into what I call, empowered thinking.

Empowered thinking is when you bring your mind and your intuition together to help you discover what you need or want to know. If you only use one or the other the process can be hard, confusing and sometimes even impossible. It’s only when your intuition and mind work together that you can be your most effective and make the best choices.

Tapping into empowered thinking to figure things out is not as hard as it sounds. Here is a simple guide to get you started:

Set a Clear and Positive Intention for Your Desired Outcome

Taking time to define your intention will provide focus, clarity, and a sense of purpose for what you want to achieve. One of my clients describes it as pulling together all of their inner resources and giving them a mission. The power of this intent can be felt energetically and will attract answers that will support you.

Uncover the Facts

Focused research and gathering information you will need keeps you on your intended path and prevents time and energy consuming detours. There are different layers of knowledge and information that will support you. Some will be part of the initial phase before you move toward your intended outcome and others will come along the way.

Clear Out Misbeliefs and Skewed Perceptions that Get in Your Way

Part of the journey is to clear the unproven ideas and perspectives that are standing between you and a solution. They are commonly things you were taught about yourself, the world or specific subjects that limit your ability to think clearly and move forward. While these misbeliefs may seem big and powerful, they are really just stories you make up in your mind and only have power over you if you allow it.

Tap Into Your Inner Knowing

There is a level of intuition inside of you that just knows. The internal voice of knowing is solid, calm, and does not try to convince you of anything. You just know. It is the voice of truth. The more we tune into that voice, the more we will be connected to our highest selves and the vast resources available to us at that level of awareness. Cultivating a relationship with your inner knowing can be one of the greatest gifts you give yourself and will help you figure things out easier. It is where the real answers reside.

In addition to the above steps for becoming an empowered thinker there are many tools that can support you in figuring things out. They include:

  • Lists – Pros and cons, options, ideas, needs, resources, findings. I love lists and the possibilities are endless.
  • Journaling – Writing things out allows us to uncover a deeper level of intuition and process our questions more fully.
  • Coaching – An experienced and professional coach (like me) can help you gain clarity and confidence in your direction.
  • Experts on the subject – In today’s world the advice of experts is only a Google search away.
  • Prayer – Ask for God’s assistance. After all, he knows everything.
  • Heavy vs. light – When you think about an option, does it feel heavy or light? Light is usually the way to go.
  • Testing Ideas – It is only when a step forward is taken that the universe can give us real time feedback.

Our lives are full of questions and dilemmas to be figured out. It helps to have a framework for doing so instead of just flailing away, hoping the right answer will show up. It can also be a comfort to know that you already have the most important resources within you.

You can skip doubt and overwhelm if you simply remember this abbreviated model to figure things out:

Intention – Information – Intuition
