We are always thinking something. More often than not, those thoughts can be negative. We can get so used to them running in the background of our minds that they feel normal and we simply accept how they make us feel.
Thoughts are just thoughts, not who you are, and you have control over them. That means that you can audit them and choose ones that serve you better.
Here are some simple ways to shift your thoughts so that you can think and feel more positive.
Turn down the volume – the voices in your head are auditory cues. One of the most effective ways to work with them is to imagine a volume control button and turn the sound down until you can barely hear them. It may seem weird, but it really works.
Give yourself a different auditory cue – Choose a phrase to say to yourself like: blank slate or fresh start. You can do this out loud or in your mind. Make it your mantra for shifting negative thinking. Or you can simply tell your negative thoughts, “goodbye” when they show up.
Be curious – Simply ask yourself, “I wonder what my next thought will be.” And just like magic you will have a new one.
Give your mind a new job – Ask yourself what you want to focus on next and then go for it.
Repeat as necessary – your mind has had years of practice thinking the way it does, but new neuro pathways can be created when you respond differently on a regular basis. When you use this process to create new habits of thinking, you will change your mind.
