From Scattered to Focused in 4 Easy Steps

I work with a lot of women who have creative minds. Their creativity is a gift that allows them to do amazing things, but sometimes they get lost in their thoughts and ideas and find it difficult to stay focused.

This happens to me too. I am an idea person. Brainstorming is one of my favorite things and my clients would tell you that some very interesting things can come out of my mind when I do this. But, I can get lost in it.

Busy brains can make it challenging to stay on task, focused, or even choose a next step. You may find yourself checking something and then “waking up” an hour later not knowing where the time has gone. Or, your brain can feel so full of thoughts and ideas calling to you that it’s hard to know what to do next.

My clients tell me they often feel overwhelmed, stuck, and sometimes trapped by their own minds. For many of them it has been a life long challenge.

Can you relate? If so, I have some tools for you.

Think in Threes: Scientist say that our brains function best when we have three or less options. So, ask yourself:

  • What are my best three choices right now?
  • What 3 things are at the core of what I want to say or write?
  • What are the top 3 ideas?
  • What 3 things do I want to focus on today?

Use This 4 Step Process:

  • Make a list of all of your ideas or options
  • Choose the top 1-3 to start with
  • Set an intention for focusing on the priority items you have chosen
  • Take immediate action

If you get stuck choosing the top 3, listen to your heart or let your body do the talking. Read through the list and see what you feel. Does your body feel soft or open with one and tighten up with another? Does one idea feel light while another feels heavy?

Choose the ones that feel the best. And, keep in mind, you are not losing the other ideas. They are documented on a list for you to go back to in the future.

These concepts may seem simple, but they work. Besides, I love simple. That’s why my business coaching website is called Simple Smart Business.

Simple is easy. It feels good. And, in this case these simple tools can take you from scattered to focused very quickly.

Go ahead. Try it out. You will be glad you did.

  1. I was struggling with focus after publishing my books. I knew I needed to make room in my writing schedule to promote, but when it came time, my promotion to-do list was overwhelming. I finally came up with the idea to organize my week into different focus areas. Now it is easy to go through my marketing tasks and still have time to write.

I like your process. Although I keep a list of various things I could do on any particular focus day, I only choose 3 things off of the list on any given day. If I find I have time for more, I can move forward, but knowing I only have to do 3 things makes me less likely to procrastinate.

Thanks for a great and helpful article.

Thank you for sharing. I do recommend blocking time and it works really well for some of my clients. I also like your list of various things to choose from each day. Kind of like a menu…
