The Surprising Freedom of Letting Go of Stuff

woman decluttering, letting go of stuff, living simply

Almost 10 years ago, I did something that felt both terrifying and freeing, I let go of almost everything I owned.

I was moving from California, where I had lived my entire life, to a small town in Missouri to be closer to family. It was a big change, and preparing for it required more than packing boxes, it required making choices and letting go.

I sold what I could, gave away the rest, and kept only what would fit into a small moving pod. The rest of my life came with me in a car, along with a ride or die friend and my two cats meowing in the back seat.

And somewhere in the middle of that process, something unexpected happened.

I realized the more I let go of, the lighter I felt. I really didn’t need much at all.

You may not be planning a big move like this, but you might recognize the feeling of being overwhelmed by what you own.

On some level, we all crave room to breathe, less stress and a lighter life. Simplifying our possessions can help make it happen.

There is no shortage of books, articles and videos about clearing clutter and there are even professionals who can help you through the process. This subject of releasing clutter comes up often with my coaching clients and other women I talk to.  It seems like we are all craving a simpler, lighter life.

Do you feel it too?

If you would like to unburden your physical environment, it’s important to become grounded in your why, have a vision for what you want and a plan for how to make it happen. Here are some steps that will help you create a foundation for your simpler, freer and more peaceful life.

  1. Get clear on what you truly value. This will help you understand the ways clutter may be out of alignment and prevent you from enjoying what matters most. You can find an exercise for identifying your values here.
  2. Write your “why” and create a vision of your future nurturing home. Journaling about or listing the benefits you will experience with more space in your life can be very motivating. Imagine what your life will be like. How will it feel? How will it impact your mood, focus and energy?
  3. Start sorting through your things. There are many decluttering methods to choose from, or you can just dive in. A general rule of thumb is to focus on keeping what you love or know you will use and let go of the rest. If it feels overwhelming, start small. This isn’t about perfection; it’s about creating a peaceful home you will love. You can also get some ideas for questions to ask yourself during the process here.
  4. Celebrate every win. Continuing your decluttering process will be a lot easier if you stay aware and acknowledge yourself for what you accomplish each step of the way.
  5. Stay focused on your vision of what you want and the freedom it will bring. It’s easy to get caught up in the challenges of doing and forget about how wonderful these changes will feel. Keep that vision alive.

And, don’t forget to be gentle with yourself and remember that you don’t have to change everything at once.

Just begin. One drawer, one shelf, one small decision at a time.

A lighter life is closer than you think.
