Stop Tolerating the Small Stuff

I bought a TV about a month ago and I am happy with it. But, every time I walk past it I notice the bright yellow sticker that needs to be removed. I pass by it over and over again throughout the day and instead of taking the sticker off, I just tolerate it.

It’s a form of clutter that steals a tiny bit of my energy every time I see it.

There are other things I tolerate, too:

  • A bag of clothes waiting to go to the donation bin
  • A couple weeds by my front porch
  • 2 pictures sitting on the floor waiting to be put on the wall
  • Emails that need to be deleted

I decided to write a list of all the small things I am tolerating and it turned out to be pretty long. When I saw all my tolerations in one place it became clear how they were slowly chipping away at my peace and contentment.

And so, I started taking care of them and checking them off the list. It went quickly since they were, after all, little things. Every time one was completed I felt a sense of relief. Doing them began to feel fun, like a game, and it became a practice in self-care.

Just like clutter, when we clear out these little things we create more space in our life. Space for something better or just more room to breathe. Each completion brings a little more peace.

Today, I am encouraging you to write your own list of tolerations. Doing so will open your eyes to how they impact your energy and life. And then, I hope you to start taking care of them.

Go ahead. Make it fun. It will feel really good.
