Too often, we find ourselves thinking about life and the things within it as hard, difficult or something we feel forced to do. We dread what will come next and brace ourselves for the work that will be required of us to keep up with the musts, shoulds and have tos we decide to take on.
We wonder why life is so hard, heavy and scary, not realizing it doesn’t have to be.
Not if you approach it as play.
I’m a big fan of keeping things light. My clients will tell you that when they start to dread something I might ask of them, I often suggest they just play with it. I can feel the surprise when new clients hear me say this the first time. But, reframing these words and taking the heat out of their perspectives brings lightness, willingness and more confidence in what they can do.
So when you:
Need to figure something out – Instead of struggling through, go play with it
Want to try something new – instead of letting fear hold you back, go play with it
Want to accomplish something – instead of seeing it as hard, go play with it
You get the idea.
All of the musts, shoulds, and have tos are simply concepts you hold in your mind. They usually aren’t even real and shouldn’t be part of your vocabulary. (You get bonus points if you decide to stop using them.)
So, let’s keep things light. When possible, approach life playfully with an open mind and heart, looking forward to what is next. You can dance with your ideas and view your life as an adventure to enjoy or you can stay stuck in the heavy and hard perspectives that have infiltrated your mind over the years.
Which will you choose?
