I don’t feel like putting together a nicely decorated home is one of my natural gifts. That may be why I still have some empty walls after moving into my latest house a year ago.
In the meantime, I have searched online, set up Pinterest boards, and created folders of pictures I liked. They may have given me some ideas, but they haven’t really helped. It’s possible they even created more stress, insecurity, and dilemma along the way.
Eventually, after letting this go on way too long, I realized I was too focused on other peoples rules and ideals and remembered I always get the best advice when I listen to my own heart. After all, it’s my home. It just needs to feel good to me.
My new focus is simply bringing in things I love. It may mean some walls stay empty longer, but little bits and pieces are already starting to come together. Now that I am paying attention to the voice of my heart, I can feel it’s guidance.
Letting things evolve over time also serves my frugality and love for flea market and garage sale finds. The picture at the top of this post is of the curtains I love that changed my whole color scheme and a hand stitched piece I got at a garage sale for 75 cents.
I’ve learned that I love color, texture, simplicity and natural elements. I am including rattan, wood, and white furniture while embracing the brick and wood stove that symbolize hearth and home.
It’s possible that my pet room may even become pure whimsy, full of cute cat and dog decor. Why not?
Most of all, instead of feeling that I am taking too long, I am remembering that decorating this house is a journey of my heart.
