Clearing clutter out of your home creates a more peaceful and supportive environment. But, sometimes it’s hard to get started or create positive momentum toward your clutter free goals.
Decluttering can feel like an overwhelming project. That is, unless you can kick start the process. One way to do this is to start with some of the things listed below.
- Any duplicate items – you usually don’t need 2,3 or more of an item
- Plugs, cords, or chargers you no longer need
- Pens that don’t write
- Books – only keep your favorites, most everything is available at your library or online
- Old greeting cards, especially if they just have a signature and no message
- Toys and clothes your kids have outgrown
- Craft supplies you know you will not use
- Piles and files of papers – if they are important, you can scan them
- Bridesmaid dresses – I know you spent a lot, but you can sell or donate them
- Take out menus – they are available online
- Freebies and samples (like hotel lotions) you have gathered , but won’t really use
- Old sunscreen makeup or skin care products – they could be unhealthy
- Food that has been in the freezer too long or passed it’s expiration date
- Tupperware or other containers without lids
- CDs – upload them to your computer and then sell the CDs
- Expired medications – probably ineffective and possibly dangerous
- Linens or other items from an old color scheme
- Eyeglasses with an old prescription – donate them to help others see
- Anything that is worn out or threadbare
- Clothes that don’t fit – if you lose weight, you deserve new clothes
- Email spam, sent, and trash folders can be fun to empty
- Cheat items (like snack foods) that are not in alignment with your goals
- Things you inherited but don’t want – there is no obligation to keep them all
- Magazines – donate them to a library or local doctor’s office
- Things you haven’t used in a year
Don’t let your things stuffocate you! Your home will feel like a sanctuary when you let go of what you no longer love or use and surround yourself with what you do.

How to Create a Simple, Heartfelt Life
Such a great list, Linda! I thought of a bunch of things I could get rid of based on those suggestions. Hopefully, I will soon. Before the urge passes. 🙂
Some of them may only take a few minutes. A lot of people contacted me to say they started with pens that don’t write and were shocked how many they had. They were able to feel like they accomplished a lot very quickly with this simple move. You will too when the time is right.
