7 Easy Ways to Transform Your Mornings & Start Your Days Right

transform your mornings start day right

How do you start your mornings? It’s easy to fall into the habit of letting negative thoughts lead the way. For many, their first thoughts are about what hurts, what they “have to” do that day, or rehashing something negative that has happened. You and I are likely to fall into that trap occasionally too, but we know there is a better way. And, it begins with morning habits that help you start your day right.

After all, how you start your day will impact how you feel and perform throughout the day.

There are many wonderful practices to choose from and you could end up spending your entire morning on them if you want. But, most of us don’t have the luxury of that much time before stepping into our days. We need morning practices that are fairly quick, easy and effective. Here are some of my favorites.

Stretch in Bed: I stretch as I am waking up. It’s easy to twist and turn your back or move into baby pose before you even get out of bed and it warms your body up for the day. It’s the closest we can probably get to feeling like cats. Don’t forget to include wiggling your toes. It’s sure to make you smile.

Start Your Day with Gratitude: Don’t let any negative thoughts take hold of your morning mind. Simply crowd them out with thoughts of love and appreciation. Some of my clients like to write lists of things they are grateful for. Others find that getting up before their mind can wander works best for them. Play with the options until you find what works for you.

Smile at Yourself in the Mirror: When we see our reflection first thing in the morning it’s easy to let our inner bully take over. Instead, start your day with a big smile. Smiles can actually lift your mood whether they are authentic or not. They send feel good chemicals through your brain and can set the standard for how your day will go.

Make Your Bed: Doing this one thing starts your day with a sense of accomplishment. It feels good to know it’s done and will lift your spirits when you see it throughout the day, especially if you work from home. When you accomplish small things it creates a pattern of success and this is a lovely way to get your momentum for the day started.

Step Outside: Feeling brisk morning air and being in nature help you feel centered for the rest of the day. Many of my clients drink their first cup of coffee on their porch or patio, listening to birds and looking at trees and flowers. Some of my clients also like to ground with the earth in the morning. They do this by standing barefoot on grass or dirt, focusing on feeling strong, rooted, and connected to all things.

Drink Water: Most nutritionists and holistic practitioners recommend drinking a large glass of water first thing. It’s a physical cleansing process that can also be used as a representation of cleansing our minds and emotions before starting the day. When you visualize the water washing your body, mind and spirit you can turn it into a all encompassing cleaning and healing tool.

Journal: Take some time, even if it’s a few moments, to write from your heart. It can be free form pages, thoughts on something going on in your life or you can use journaling prompts to guide or start the process. When we journal from the heart we open the door to our inner wisdom and the results can be surprising and wonderful. If you don’t know how to begin, start with gratitude, acknowledging yourself for things you do or try my favorite prompt – What does my heart want me to know?

My wish for you is that you play with these easy morning practices or find others you so that your days can consistently start in a gentle, positive and loving way.
