The Gifts of Living a Simple Life

When people hear that I choose to live simply they shake their heads and say they could never survive a simple life. In their minds they are picturing life in a cabin with one chair, one plate, and one fork. Or, a house that is cold, colorless, empty, and devoid of personality. And then, they imagine having to wear old, worn, and frumpy thrift store clothes, maybe even pioneer dresses. To them simple living sounds like a nightmare.

But, the truth is, it’s nothing like that at all.

A simple life is about choosing to surround yourself with people and things that are meaningful and letting go of what no longer works for you. There is no need for scarcity or denial. By letting go of what you don’t want, you create more time and space for what you do.

You get to keep what you cherish and release what drains you. Surround yourself with people who uplift you and activities that bring meaning and joy into your life. You can spend your time on what inspires you and let go of what pulls you down.

Clearing out clutter and chaos brings peace of mind. You won’t feel as scattered or overwhelmed when you are in a simple, clutter free space. You will feel stronger, less reactive, and have more resilience when it is needed.

Living simply feels like taking a deep breath of relaxation and then marinating in that peaceful feeling. You will feel more available for connecting deeply with yourself, God, and the people you care about. Your purpose, passion, and creativity will bubble to the surface and you will find it easier to show up in the world as your best self.

I know this may sound strange, but I have lived it and felt it. Not perfectly. No one ever does. Especially, not me. But, it is when I stay thoughtful, grounded in my values, and make conscious choices that I feel my best, and living simply supports me in making that happen.

There are no rules or regulations about creating a simple life. If anyone tries to tell you it needs to look a certain way, run quickly in the other direction. What you choose to let go of or surround yourself with is up to you. Simply live in a way that brings you peace.

I would encourage you, though, to add an element of slowing down, focusing on one thing at a time, and allowing space in your days to sit in nature, create, or do whatever feeds your soul. When you do, you are likely to notice that your heart has been speaking to you all along. You were just too busy and your life was too full to hear it.

Creating a simple life can be a graceful process, that moves forward one small step at a time. You don’t have to turn your life upside down. Unless you want to.

So, what do you think? Are you ready to join me and take that first step toward a more simple and peaceful life? If so, I encourage you to choose a simple step to get started and do it as soon as you can. You can share about it or tell me what you think in the comments below.
