Accidental Transformations

butterfly transformation change finding good in challenges

One of my clients this morning was reflecting on how her life took a surprising turn that led to something wonderful and new.

She was laid off last year, just a few months before her fully funded retirement. She was angry, terrified, and felt like all had been lost.

But, then something interesting happened. As she worked with an attorney and financial planner to re-negotiate her future, she began to feel called to help people feel more peace with money and create financial independence. One year later, she is a certified financial coach with a part time business she is passionate about.

This morning as we were reflecting on her journey we realized that it felt like she had experienced an accidental transformation.

And, she’s not the only one. I have witnessed:

*A woman who became a popular advocate for simple living based on what she learned worked for her after being diagnosed with M.S.

*A man who lost his home in a flood and found peace and redemption in helping others rebuild theirs.

*A woman who took a break from being a lawyer to care for her dying mother and ended up creating a non-profit organization for caregivers.

These accidental transformations are happening all around us in big and small ways. Maybe you have experienced them, too. My latest one felt like my life was emptying out and resulted in a move cross country to live near my family.

When life becomes challenging it can be hard to see the magic at play. In most cases though, when you look back with hindsight you can see why things happened the way they did. There is almost always a positive lesson or outcome to be found.

The next time you feel like the floor has dropped out from under you or your life is changing without your permission, remember that transformation may soon follow.

You may not be able to see it or comprehend how what you are going through could have any good attached to it.

But, sometimes our lives need to be shaken up and emptied out to create space or open our minds to new possibilities.

It might be a wild ride, but it is times like these when accidental transformations occur.
