25 Productive and Fun Indoor Activities for When It’s Cold Outside

looking out window at rain indoor activities

This is my first winter outside of California and I am learning a lot about the seasons and cold weather. I’m still not comfortable driving in snow and icy conditions and am grateful that I work from home and can stay in on those days. My CA friends are experiencing an unusual amount of rain and feeling house bound too.

Wintry weather makes me want to sit on the couch with a cat in my lap and read novels or binge watch Netflix. It feels great for awhile, but I can only sit for so long before getting antsy and wanting to find something to do. Something productive or fun that doesn’t involve putting on a coat or chipping ice off my car.

Here is what I have done so far:

  • Cleared my email inbox
  • Caught up on webinars, podcasts, and blogs I wanted to read
  • Re-organized pictures and downloads on my computer
  • Cleaned the house
  • Cleared out and re-organized my closet, choosing a capsule wardrobe to focus on
  • Journaled about my year to come and what I want to bring to it
  • Researched a couple projects I’m planning
  • Did some yoga and stretching along with exercises for my poor lost abs
  • Cleaned up my browser bookmarks and Facebook notifications

I have more potential projects to keep me busy during upcoming storms

  • Re-organize my office folders and put as much online as possible
  • Start getting things ready for my tax appointment
  • Finish decorating my living room
  • Start planning for spring plantings in my yard
  • Create my next coaching or online program

And, here are even more indoor activities ideas we can all consider:

  • Taking an online course and learning something new
  • Art, crafts, or anything that expresses creativity
  • Researching and planning a summer vacation
  • Trying new recipes
  • Clearing out the junk drawer, or closet, or room
  • Starting or growing a home-based business
  • Finding and using online resources or DVD’s for exercising at home
  • Inviting people over for board games, hot chocolate, and good conversation
  • Writing a blog, poetry, book, ebook, or legacy memoir to share with family
  • Getting rid of stuff that no longer fits, is not used regularly, or no longer feels meaningful
  • Small home improvement projects
  • Reviewing finances and creating a new money plan

There are definitely plenty of indoor activities you can do when stuck inside during bad weather. I bet you have some favorites of your own. Feel free to share them in the comments below.

    Linda,

These are great ideas to schedule into our lives no matter what the weather. Sounds like they all lead to a calmer inner and outer environment.

    Thanks for sharing them.

I love these ideas. We’ve had an unusual amount of snowy and icy days here. I’m always looking for different things to do because I easily get bored with doing the same thing. I have been coloring, sorting and going through stored pictures on my computer, bundling up and taking my dog outside because he’s feeling house bound as well, writing snail mail to those I know will really appreciate it (because who gets snail mail any longer) and catching up on all of the magazines that have been laying around. 🙂

Coloring sounds like fun and I’m a big fan of snail mail. Thanks for sharing some of what you do. I almost added that I wish I had a dog, but deleted it because wishing that could get me into trouble. lol

Sometimes this is an opportunity to lay down, listen to the rain and daydream. ‘Active’ resting can be good for the soul 🙂

Love your ideas. I moved to Kauai in 2015 and there are very few “wintery” type of days. Winter here is 70 degrees and no sun. Funny thing, I wanted to escape cold (moved from Las Vegas which got too cold for my taste) but people in Kauai look forward to “cold” days because it reminds most of us what winter used to be like. Enjoyed your post very much!!
